NICKI AND SEAN ATE a late breakfast together before he left for home. It was late morning because they’d stayed up past midnight talking. Before Sean left, he held Nicki close and promised to find a way to quit drinking.

They made no other promises, no other plans. There would be no dating or spending the night with each other. They’d never said it out loud, but it was understood.

Nicki felt like their hearts had communicated what their words couldn’t. Frankly, she knew she was too weak to say much; she didn’t trust herself to maintain her resolve and, fortunately, Sean knew what she wanted and needed and vocalized part of it. The rest remained unspoken.

Nicki had but one Tribune report due and she figured, no matter how insipid, it would be a piece of cake. It would be a report on Black Friday shoppers. She also had to work at the drug store that night, so the main thing was she had to get her article written and emailed before her shift. She’d already written the fluff part; she only had to interview a few shopkeepers and snap a few pics and she’d be good to go.

She was out of the shower and blow drying her hair when she saw her cell phone signaling her of an incoming call. Looking down, she read the display and saw that it was from an unknown number. She considered letting it go to voicemail, but something told her not to, so she stopped drying her hair to answer it. “Yes?”

“Nicki,” began Janice Breaker’s voice, “can you meet for coffee in the next half hour?”

Nicki blinked, because her blogger friend was the last person she’d expected on the line. “Did you get a new phone?”

She could hear the patronizing tone in Janice’s voice, but she could also tell the woman was trying to curb it. “This is a pay-as-you-go model.”

Nicki was learning and getting better about keeping up with Janice, a woman who was always thinking, always one step ahead of everyone else. “Because you’re changing our plans?”

This time there was the slight sound of relief in the woman’s voice. “Yes. So...coffee in the next half hour?”

“Sure. Where?”

“The crowds are going to be crazy today.” Nicki figured that would mean they’d need to try even harder to stay out of everyone’s sight. Once again, though, Janice threw her a curve ball. “We won’t be able to stay out of the thick of things anyway, so why don’t we meet at the Coffee Stop?”

“Okay. See you in a bit.” Fortunately, it was close to all the shopping action, so Nicki would be able to get her newspaper research done right after. One stone for two birds. She just had to finish her hair and throw on some boots and she’d be on her way.
